Introduction

Michael Hart founded Project Gutenberg in 1971 when he published the first eBook. Of course, the digital media looked much different in 1971 than it does now. To this day Hart’s memory continues, inspiring the creation of thousands of new eBooks with the help of thousands of volunteers, each working to digitize and proofread the world’s literature. As per the organization’s website, Project Gutenberg’s eBooks are “completely free and always will be.” Pieces of classic literature written hundreds or even thousands of years ago are not restricted by copyrights from reproduction. If any copyright existed, it often expired decades or centuries ago. In this space, Project Gutenberg works to provide readers with digitized copies of these classics to both educate and preserve human history.

With the rise of digital libraries and catalogues like Project Gutenberg, it has never been easier to access thousands of titles for free. The project now boasts over 75,000 titles, making timeless classics accessible to anyone with an internet connection and a device to read them on. Many file formats are available for the most commercially popular platforms like Amazon’s Kindle, or Barnes and Noble’s Nook, and more.

Anymore, the challenge isn’t finding books—it’s keeping track of the ones you want to read, the ones you’ve started, and the ones you’ve finished. That’s where monoca 2 comes into play. By creating unique categories and custom fields, you can turn any smartphone into a personalized catalog for all your Project Gutenberg downloads.

Previous Articles

In past articles, we’ve looked at how monoca 2 can enhance the user’s daily life, track grocery prices, and even organize minis for tabletop gaming. Each of those examples showed how the app’s customizable categories and fields make it flexible for any kind of collection.

Tabletop Gaming with monoca 2

This time, we’re using monoca 2 to track Project Gutenberg books we already have, or want to download. In the next article, we’ll be covering archive.org and their extensive library of content.

Where to Download

The fully unlocked version of monoca 2 comes with unlimited item creation, 10 shared groups, no ads, and higher resolution icons and images. It is available for a single, lifetime unlock payment of $9.99. Share your device’s trial code with a friend to give them a 25% discount. Share each other’s codes and you can both receive a discount.

App Store: Download for iPhone/iPad

The Vision of Michael Hart

Project Gutenberg was more than just an experiment; it was a vision. In 1971, Michael Hart typed the U.S. Declaration of Independence into a university computer system, believing digital access to books could change the world. His mission was simple: make literature that had surpassed copyright limits freely available to all.

Today, the collection spans novels, short stories, poetry, reference works, and historical documents. You’ll find Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, and more. Works that once cost money in bookstores are now public domain treasures, free to read on any compatible device.

Customizing a Category for Project Gutenberg Books

Here’s how I set mine up in monoca 2. I created a “Project Gutenberg Library” category with the following fields:

Title

Author

Year Published

Name of Orig. Publisher

Reading Status (To Read, In Progress, Completed)

Format (ePub, Kindle, PDF, HTML)

ISBN

Direct Link (URL)

Enjoyed? (1-5)

Barcode

With these fields, I can instantly filter unread books, search by author, or track my personal progress. It has been years since I read Bram Stoker’s Dracula and I never got around to reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. A quick visit to the Gutenberg Project’s website and a few taps later, my monoca 2 entry for Frankenstein was marked ‘To Read’, complete with the direct download URL.

Sharing Your Library with Friends

Another great feature is the ability to share categories. Maybe your friend is working on a research paper about Victorian literature, while you’re more interested in Greek classics. By sharing your monoca 2 categories, you can help each other discover new texts and share notes or opinions on various works.

In my own case, as a birthday gift one year I received an e-reader from an obscure Russian company called Boox. As recently as only a few years ago, Boox brand devices were only available from a single specialty import store in NYC. Their paperwhite screens are excellent for reading but the slow loading paper-like screen makes internet browsing a pain. By sharing the Gutenberg category from my primary Gmail account with the secondary Gmail I use on the e-reader, navigating directly to the download site is exceedingly simple. It’s a small detail, but the category share feature is a huge timesaver for me.

Conclusion

Michael Hart dreamed of a world where knowledge could be shared freely, and Project Gutenberg continues that mission today. Pairing it with monoca 2 ensures that your personal library—no matter how large—stays organized and easy to enjoy.

With so many e-readers available on the open market, including e-readers with paperwhite screens that closely imitate the experience of reading a physical book, why wait? There are so many countless works available on Project Gutenberg, for free, waiting to be read, explored, and enjoyed. The combination of Gutenberg and monoca 2 means storing and organizing digital literature is at its most accessible and most convenient ever in recorded history. If you find storage is getting short, delete the file and with monoca 2, you’re a click away from another download from Gutenberg’s servers.

We at Sola, Inc. would love to hear from you. Leave a comment below and share how you organize your digital reading life!

Introduction

Michael Hart created the first eBook in 1971 when he typed out a copy of the United States Constitution and stored it on a computer system. Archive.org later took up that same spiritual torch when they began archiving the internet itself in 1996. In their own words, at that time, the internet was… “a medium just beginning to grow in use.” It’s hard to image life without the internet now, but back then, it was a slowly waking giant. While both Project Gutemberg and Archive.org provide access to an incredible range of materials, their approaches are different.

Gutenberg focuses on public domain works, while the Internet Archive, or Archive.org, for short, functions more like a digital library, operating in what some consider a legal grey zone. Media companies are quick to copyright strike any reproduction of their content for commercial use, and rightfully so, but then how does cataloging and archiving fit into that mix? And what if something were to happen to mankind… wouldn’t we want some preservation of our collective creative history?

Here we’ll explore using monoca 2 to further expand upon the collection-building we did with Project Gutenberg. While Project Gutenberg boasts over 75,000 available texts, Archive.org took that number into the millions. Note: please continue reading for a note on copyrighted content and how Sola of America, Inc. does not condone copyright infringement of any kind.

The Difference Between Gutenberg and Internet Archive

At first glance, Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive look similar—they both provide digital books (and other media at Archive.org). But here’s the key distinction:

Project Gutenberg: provides public domain books that are free to download as their copyright has expired or the text is so old there was never a copyright in the first place.

Internet Archive: Books, journals, and multimedia that are often still under copyright. You can borrow them like you would from a library by creating a free account.

This difference matters. Gutenberg is about free literature beyond copyright, while the Internet Archive provides access without ownership.

Why Organization matters for Researchers

If you’re using the Internet Archive for school or research, you know how quickly things can get messy. You check out a few books for a paper, scan through multiple editions, and then struggle to remember which one had the quote you needed.

That’s where monoca 2 comes in. By creating a category for your Internet Archive loaners, you can track every title with fields like:

Title

Author

Format (ePub, Kindle, PDF, HTML)

Loan Start Date

Loan Expiration Date

Research Notes

Tags (History, Science, Literature, etc.)

Direct URL

Quotes

This way, you’ll never scramble to relocate sources or miss a loan expiration date again.

A Note on Piracy

It’s important to clarify: Sola of America, Inc. does not condone piracy. The Internet Archive is a legitimate library resource and using monoca 2 to organize your borrowed or legally owned content is about convenience—not avoiding payment to creators. If you love a book enough to keep it, buy a copy. Monoca 2 simply helps you manage what you’ve accessed so you can stay on top of your learning. You’ll see in the screenshot above it says Borrow Unavailable. This means that the book I wanted to check out from Archive, just like a traditional library, was not available. Some works allow users to be notified when a particular media is returned, so they can, in turn, borrow it.

Unlocking Modern Works

The true strength of Archive.org lies in its breadth and diversity. Want to explore vintage cookbooks? Rare science fiction magazines? University-level history texts? Archive.org likely has them. The borrowing system functions much like a digital public library—users can check out books for a limited period and read them in-browser or through compatible e-readers. In monoca 2, setting up a separate Archive.org Reading List category allows readers to track books borrowed and downloaded. User may choose to add a Waitlisted (Y/N) subfield for more popular works, then review the content URL as time permits to confirm if another user has returned the desired book. Convenient!

Conclusion

The beauty of pairing monoca 2 with free digital libraries is that it makes categorizing and storing digital print media a more sustainable effort. Project Gutenberg offers a foundation in timeless classics, while Archive.org opens the doors to both modern and historical works.

Whether it’s a passion for literature, research for personal projects, or just the joy of saving money while enjoying free resources, monoca 2 can help keep your reading organized.

We’d love to hear how you, the reader, are using monoca 2 to track and enhance your own reading journey. Share your creative setups in the comments and thank you for joining us once again.

Introduction

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about tabletop gaming, it’s that collecting figures is every bit as addictive as playing the game itself. You start with a starter set, maybe a few paints, and before long, you’ve got dozens—or even hundreds—of miniatures scattered across shelves, boxes, and storage bins. Ask any Warhammer 40K player how many Space Marines they own, and chances are, the answer comes with a sheepish laugh. For Dungeons & Dragons players, the story is similar. You begin with a hero figurine or two, then suddenly, you’re sitting on a small army of goblins, dragons, and NPCs for your campaigns.

The challenge isn’t just buying and painting these figures—it’s keeping track of them all. That’s where monoca 2, an item organization app available for both iOS and Android, makes a real difference. Creating a category in the app is one thing, but building the habit of actually using it during your hobby sessions is what transforms the experience. In this article, I’ll talk about how tabletop gamers can bring order to their collections, avoid frustration, and even make their hobby more enjoyable by organizing figures in monoca 2.

Previous Articles

In past articles, we’ve looked at how monoca 2 can be used for everyday life—organizing birthday cards, rating restaurants, and even tracking grocery prices. Each of those examples showed how the app’s customizable categories and fields make it flexible for any kind of collection.

Grocery Shopping with monoca 2

This time, we’re diving into tabletop gaming, where that flexibility is invaluable. The same app that helps you sort recipes or track warranties can also track the points value of a Warhammer 40K miniature or whether your D&D monster is painted or still just a primed base coat.

Warhammer 40K Armies

Anyone who plays Warhammer 40K knows the struggle of building armies while juggling dozens of miniatures, points values, and half-painted squads. One week you’re focusing on finishing a squad of Space Marines, the next you’re adding a new tank to your Astra Militarum collection. Without a system, it’s easy to lose track.

In monoca 2, I built a category called “Warhammer 40K Figures” with the following custom fields:

Owner

Date Purchased

Purchase Price

Points Value

Painted vs. Unpainted

Paint Code(s)

Barcode

Photo

As the author, it’s necessary to inform the audience that I do not personally play Warhammer 40,000. It looks like a lot of fun, and I’ve heard from several who do play that the community is an amazing and supportive one. I simply do not have the time (or budget) required to fully appreciate the experience. From what I hear, it’s a very personal thing: choosing an army, priming the miniatures, painting them, then rolling for hours. It’s intense.

The above-referenced categories I chose based on feedback from friends who play. While many might be unwilling to loan out their miniatures, nonetheless I left the Owner category in case you’re fortunate enough to have a friend lend you minis for a game. Army Categories, if organizing by army type (race), can be easily shared amongst friends for further collaboration.

Dungeons & Dragons Adventures

D&D campaigns bring a different set of challenges. Just like in Warhammer, miniatures in D&D often represent specific characters, monsters, or NPCs. Those figures move in and out of use depending on the storyline. When I was in high school, and at university (some), I played D&D. If I’m being honest, I think buying new dice sets was one of my favorite parts of the whole process. There are some custom dice makers out there with truly exceptional talent for making dice.

Whether cataloging dragons, goblins, townsfolk, or tile sets, there is a tremendous amount to keep track of for D&D enthusiasts. Having participated in several D&D campaigns and watched several Warhammer 40K games, I’d say D&D is the more collaborative of the two. It was always my experience one member of a given friend group agreed to play ‘Dungeon Master’ in perpetuity—mainly because they were the only person to fully understand the rules. While the Dungeon Master is usually the one with the most minis and tiles, others who play regularly as a part of a larger group are likely contributing. This leads us into the next section where monoca 2 excels at tabletop gaming with category sharing.

Sharing Collections (Categories) with Friends

One of the most underappreciated features of monoca 2 is the ability to share categories. In tabletop gaming, this is an essential feature when building campaigns with friends in D&D or laying terrain for a Warhammer match.

While some individuals may be less open to sharing minis, terrain is a common denominator across both games. Similar to the real world, terrain affects stats like defense and chance to hit. It’s also part of what makes both campaigns and matches dynamic, is the field setup. I’ve witnessed it personally a handful of times—players collaborating with one another. One player might have a large inventory of buildings, while another has mountains or other biomes. By sharing categories in monoca 2, everyone can see what’s available. Those who frequently play together can then reference the group’s collective pieces when planning their next game.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, tabletop gaming is about fun. But without organization, the fun can turn into frustration when you can’t find the miniature you need or don’t remember which ones are painted and ready to deploy. By building a habit of logging your figures into monoca 2, you make your hobby smoother and more rewarding for all involved.

Whether you’re commanding vast Warhammer 40K armies or guiding adventurers through a forest teaming with venomous spiders, monoca 2 keeps your figures—and your hobby—organized.

So ask yourself: “What do I care enough about in my gaming to level up my experience?” If the answer is your figure collection, monoca 2 is ready to help.

We at Sola, Inc. would love to hear from you. Leave a comment below and share how you use monoca 2 to bring order to your tabletop universe!!

Introduction

Until recently, the drawer of my nightstand was stuffed several years’ worth of birthday cards and other personal treasures. For the purposes of this article, the term personal treasure means a sentimental gift from friends or family, usually a card or letter. One convenience of the digital age is our ability to preserve memories, like photos, without taking up physical space. Will people still keep physical copies? Of course they will. My wife and I exchange love letters several times a year, mostly on special occasions, and I have no plans of digitizing them—ever. That said, for years I’d felt personally torn on what to do with other personal treasures: birthday cards, Christmas cards, a thoughtful note from friends and family—all meaningful, but taking up space.

Every time I removed a card from the refrigerator or cleaned out a drawer, I was struck with a pang of guilt. Here this person took the time to buy a birthday card, or create, print, then physically mail an update on their family and here I am throwing it in the trash, I thought. In a world where analog gestures like letter-writing and print-media are decreasing, I felt guilty throwing away that family member’s kindness. The solution of using monoca 2 to solve this dilema came to me while staring at the pile of birthday cards in my nightstand. I wanted to preserve the memory, but declutter the house. In this article we’re making a ‘keepsake’ category in monoca 2. Let’s get into it!

Building the Keepsake Category

I chose to name this category Birthday Cards (Personal Treasures). As the reader, you may choose to shorten the title to something like Keepsakes, but the spirit of the category remains the same. Our goal is to provide a space within monoca 2 for recording essential details from things like birthday cards, Fathers or Mother’s Day cards, or even Kids’ projects from school (if you have children). When kids are growing up, they bring back so many art and sentimental projects to mom and dad. As their favorite people in the world, who else are they going to dedicate them to? The problem becomes, where do you store all those keepsakes when you live in an apartment or small house and space comes at a premium.

Starting with a default category as our baseline by tapping Add Category from the monoca 2 home screen, name the category, then proceed to the Edit Fields section. I removed every pre-set field except Photo. I chose not to share any images of my own cards’ contents for privacy reasons. However, when cataloging the stack of cards shown above, I will capture clear pictures of the messages for future reading.

Subcategories and Fields

After deleting all the default fields except Photo, I added several more fields for capturing what I considered essential information. See my list below with the name (left) and field subtype (parenthesis), but edit to your own liking.

Date (date)

To (Text: 1 Line)

From (Text: 1 Line)

Occasion (Text: 1 Line)

What Made it Special? (Text: Multiline)

Gifts Received (Text: Multiline)

Photo (Images)

Recording these details in a timely manner means your memories are freshest. It’s more difficult to clearly recall the small, meaningful parts of the day 6 months or even 6 days in the future. It’s interesting how memory works in that a few key pieces of information to start the process can bring everything else flooding back. For me, the What Made it Special field is so critical. Here is where you want to record as many details as possible about why the day was so enjoyable (or not enjoyable). It can be so simple to make others feel good about a kind gesture. “Hey, I really appreciate how you made my birthday cake from scratch that one year instead of buying it at the supermarket. I know it took you a long time but it was delicious!” It’s surprising how good a simple comment like this can make someone feel.

Conclusion

Now that we’ve completed our Keepsake category setup, it’s time to start creating items and preserving memories. Shown in the photos above, I’ve got a stack of birthday cards to work through. Most of the cards have the date and/or year written on them, so there’s at least a starting point, but specific details of days going back several years’ time will be difficult to fill in. Regardless, now I have a system in place for memorializing life’s moments without having to hoard cards and other tokens of appreciation. When feeling sentimental, there’s a way to quickly and easily remember what made those days so special. I can tell you from experience, starting a story with, “Remember when we…” is almost always a great conversation starter.

Introduction

Forming good habits and breaking bad habits often proves difficult. Everyone knows exercising is good for the body, yet how many people do you know who exercise even 30 minutes a day 3 – 4 times a week? If it’s one thing I’ve learned in life, change starts from within. Maybe you or someone you know does want to start a new exercise routine. I’ve seen the whole scenario play out exactly the same way so many times. If the person starting the routine is not themselves invested in making the change, the old habit of not exercising regularly will remain. It does not matter how many times you invite the person to the gym or to go for a run, their lack of commitment to the new habit will cause any short-lived ambition to fizzle out.

In three previous articles on using the item organization app, monoca 2, we showcased sample categories for cooking recipes, food price tracking, and storage (garage). Setting up a category within monoca 2 with the intentions to use it are one thing. Incorporating a category’s use into one’s daily life is another matter entirely. This article talks about incorporating monoca 2 categories from previous articles in your daily life. Building good habits isn’t just about the structure, it’s about commitment. Let’s get into it!

Cooking Recipe Category

If you’ve been following along with any of the monoca 2 articles, I mention regularly how often my wife and I cook. The advantages of cooking at home versus eating in restaurants or order takeout are significant. And if you think restaurants are cleaner because they require periodic inspections and employees must pass food handling exams, just ask a friend that works in the food service industry to share their thoughts.

To avoid eating the same foods every single week, naturally one starts to expand their recipe list and the measurements start to blend together. Does the soup call for 1 cup or 2 cups of spinach? Wait… was it spinach or kale? How much baking soda does the banana bread call for—or was it baking powder? Sometimes, you just can’t remember no matter how many times you’ve made a recipe. This happened to me twice in the same month.

Poke Example

The first time came about while making poke. I could not remember the amount of sesame oil in the shoyu sauce for the ahi. Knowing the recipe is saved in my Cooking Recipes category in monoca 2, within a few taps the AllRecipes website pulled up on my phone and I found the answer. It’s not that I don’t seriously enjoy the taste of sesame oil, the ingredient gives many Asian dishes its signature flavor, but add too much and it becomes overpowering.

Banana Bread Example

The second instance came while baking banana bread. Again, I could not remember the quantity of baking soda needed for the bread to rise sufficiently while in the oven. Using the monoca 2 app, within a few taps the recipe was pulled up and I confirmed the quantity without having to break out the recipe printouts, which are stored upstairs and not the kitchen. Building the monoca 2 category and then accessing it when needed are examples of habits that can save the user time and prevent frustration.

Food Price Tracking

Despite inflation in the US starting to level out, the tariff tug-of-war, among other economic pressures, has grocery prices fluctuating. As someone always on the hunt for a good deal, I was able to confirm my prospective savings prior to making recent purchases of both butter and eggs.

In a recent trip to Costco, they happened to have eggs in stock. At one location close to my house, egg inventory has improved in recent months, but not to pre-avian flu levels. At its worst, eggs were impossible to find or if they could be found, sold for as high as $0.75 an egg. Using monoca 2, I compared the recent July 7th price of 5-dozen eggs to the previous Costco purchase of the same quantity back in early May. The July price—$13.19, while May’s price was $17.19. A nice savings.

The same thing happened while recently shopping at Fred Meyer. Another bargain grocery outlet sold boxes of 4-sticks of butter for $3.68 in early May, whereas Fred Meyer’s sale price came out to $2.99. Nice!

Conclusion

I understand saving less than a dollar on a box of butter by purchasing it on sale or at another grocery store is not interesting to every reader. As the person who goes to the store most in my family, it’s within my best-interest to track grocery prices and deal hunt. If I can save even $50 or $100 a month by tracking prices with monoca 2, that translates into a massage for my wife, a dinner date, or putting extra money towards the car loan. If bargain grocery shopping is not sufficient motivation to track purchases on monoca 2, what is? Ask yourself that question. “What do I care enough about to start a new positive habit and try to save money on every month?”

The answer to that question could be anything. It’s your own life, after all. If not for grocery shopping, what do you, the reader, use monoca 2 to track and organize? We at Sola, Inc. want to hear from you. Take a moment to write a comment below and share with us the creative ways you use monoca 2. Thank you again, for reading, and we’ll catch you on the next one!

Introduction

monoca 2 recently received a major update to its Barcode feature that allows the user to instantly capture and search for product barcodes. Right from the monoca 2 item creating screen, users can look up the items on Amazon, eBay, and via a Google web search. The Amazon search feature is not completely finalized for the US market, however. Barcodes searched on Amazon from within the monoca 2 app will take the user to Amazon.jp, the Japan-based Amazon platform.

As I thought about the different use case possibilities with the barcode lookup feature, I could not find an immediate convenience for cataloging one-time purchase items such as books. Later, I realized that feature would significantly enhance the convenience of ordering ‘maintenance’ items such as return register air filters, air purifier filters, or water filters (sink or refrigerator). We’ll explore that concept more in another article.

For the purposes of this article, I chose several objects with different origins to better evaluate monoca 2’s barcode search function. The results were impressive. Let’s get into it!

Previous Articles

In previous articles we’ve discussed using monoca 2 for collecting and rating coffee, registering purchased products for warranty, and using category presets. Links to those articles as well as where to download monoca 2 for both Android and iPhone are posted below.

monoca 2 Presets

Reorganizing the Garage with monoca 2

Where to Download

The fully unlocked version of monoca 2 comes with unlimited item creation, 10 shared groups, no ads, and higher resolution icons and images, is available for a single, lifetime unlock payment of $9.99. Share your device’s trial code with a friend to give them a 25% discount. Share each other’s codes and you can both receive a discount.

App Store: Download for iPhone/iPad

Google Play: Download for Android

Web(Beta): https://monoca2.web.app/

Category Parameters

Since this article was meant to serve as a test for the new update, I’ve yet to incorporate the barcode field into other previously made categories as an enhancement, but plan to review them soon. The category is called BARCODE TESTERS. Inside there are three subcategories: Shipped from Japan, Bought in US, and Books. When choosing the subcategories, my goal was to test different kinds of items to investigate how effective a search monoca 2 performed.

I will carry forward the subcategory fields listed below into a new category for Wishlist items. An often-overlooked function of monoca 2 is the user’s ability to create new Collections. The default collections are All Items, Owned Items, and Wishlist. Up until this point, items listed under the various categories discussed in these articles were all owned items of mine. After the barcode update came out, I realized the potential to ‘price watch’ an item seen in the store. Refer to the second set of screen captures for more info on this.

Subcategory Fields

Barcode (Barcode)

Price (Number)

Best Price Source (Text 1 Line)

Date for Best Price (Date)

Note (Text Multiline)

Photo (Images)

Search Items via Barcode

After the initial category setup, it was time to add my test items. I chose a chocolate drink powder mix that is a special import item, a book (Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy), and a metal toolbox from Toyo brand in Japan—also a specialty import. While not shown below, I took a photo of the chocolate drink mix container but it was blurred. The barcode scanner works so quickly, as soon as it’s within the camera’s view it is captured. Crazy.

It’s important to note that an item’s barcode cannot be searched prior to the item being saved. Once saved, tapping the barcode pulls up a search directory. As mentioned earlier, searching Amazon searches Amazon.jp, not the US Amazon. Let’s avoid that for now.

Using the eBay search option, the barcode found the exact print for my copy of Anna Karenina. The web search, seen on the next screen capture, pulls up the book’s listing on the US Amazon (I verified), and on Penguin House, the publisher’s website.

No Secondary Barcode Application

If you are an iPhone user, even on the most up-to-date version of iOS is unable to read barcodes directly with the camera in the same way it scans QR codes. The thought may have occurred to some readers that using monoca 2 for scanning barcodes is somehow slower. Depending on whether a user downloaded a separate barcode app has, I’d guess the speed is the same or slower. It is not an exaggeration when I say the search results after tapping each search platform were nearly instantaneous. Sola executed the API (application programable interface) used for connecting each platform well.

Conclusion

Even as I wrap up writing this article, I imagined another use for the barcodes: looking up children’s toys as a kid. It’s any wonder my own mother didn’t kick me out of the house for being so annoying. Every time we went to a supermarket that sold more than just groceries, you can bet I begged to walk the toy aisles. One of the beautiful things about the internet is the access and speed with which anyone with a connection can access information. If you’re walking the aisles with your kid and they want a specific toy, with monoca 2 you easily confirm if that store has the best price or if it’s cheaper online.

Knowing the barcode can be equally useful when searching for rare or collector’s items as they are unique, allowing the user to pinpoint the exact items they’re looking for. As I go about the next couple of weeks, I’m sure I will think of more applications for the new feature. Until then!

If you have any feedback or suggestions for content in future articles, leave a comment below. I look forward to hearing from you and we’ll catch you on the next one.

Introduction

Recently, Sola made an investment in the monoca 2 organization app and rolled out an impressive update. In the next posted article, we’ll discuss one of those update features, which allows the user to scan and look up barcodes on Amazon and other providers. As a result of the investment, the price of monoca 2’s lifetime unlock fee increased from $7.99 to $9.99. In case the modest uptick in price is too much for some readers’ budgets, this article reviews the free version of monoca 2, to include a comparison of the paid vs. free features.

While thankfully my wife and I are not experiencing extreme budgeting currently, at various points in our lives both of us have been beyond broke. I’m not here to shame anyone if you feel you cannot afford the unlocked version. I will comment, however, that the $9.99 lifetime unlock fee is less than two coffees from a coffee shop, a lunch special at a restaurant not even including tip and a drink, or a dozen donuts (depending on the shop). A quick aside, not that one should eat donuts with any regularity but… I stopped visiting my favorite donut shop in town after their prices increased to $18 for a dozen. Sheesh. Let’s get into it!

Previous Articles

In previous articles we’ve discussed using monoca 2 for collecting and rating coffee, registering purchased products for warranty, and using category presets. Links to those articles as well as where to download monoca 2 for both Android and iPhone are posted below.

Free vs. Unlocked Versions

The differences between the free and unlocked (paid) versions of monoca 2 are mostly innocuous. It’s one aspect of Sola I appreciate as a company. Countless times with the free version of an app I grew frustrated with the severely limited use or obnoxious paywalls. With 30-second (or longer) full-screen ads and a nearly invisible “X” button to close it out the message was obvious—give us money to make this headache go away. Those experiences left me with the impression that the company did not care about creating a genuinely useful or convenient app, only in getting paid. More to come on Sola’s advertising practices later in the article. Below are bullet points with the key differences highlighted.

Full Version

Unlimited registration of products

Create up to 10 groups for sharing categories

Unlimited number of categories attached to shared groups

No Ads (obviously)

Free Version

Registration of products limited to 100 pieces

Create 1 group for sharing

Up to 3 categories attached to the single shared group

Ads shown

Unobtrusive Advertisements

In a future article I want to discuss mindfulness and incorporating solid organizational practices into your daily life. I mention this because if you’ve been following along and read the article on Warranty Registration, you’ll notice I added a couple of new entries (see screen captures). Following my own advice, the company I purchased the foot massager from off of Amazon extends the manufacturer’s warranty from 1 year to 3 years if registered within 30 days of purchase.

Looking at any of the screen captures, you’ll notice the bottom ~1/8 of the screen is occupied by advertisements on the free version of monoca 2. The ads rotate from time to time, but per my experience they are unobtrusive and generally do not detract from the user experience. The second capture shows the error message you’ll receive if attempting to add more than 3 categories with a shared group. Finally, there is a 100-count entry cap for all stored items, which should be more than enough for most users to successfully play around on the platform and make a purchase decision one way or another.

Conclusion

My next big organization project is to create entries for several hundred books from my personal ‘library’. Collection might be a better word for all the books rather than library. Regardless, there are a handful of repeats because I’m a sucker for a good deal. I purchased a book from a second-hand bookstore for $2 only to find out there was copy at home sitting on the shelf. Adding all those titles to a category will spare me from making those mistakes in the future.

In my experimentation with the free version of monoca 2, other than the total items limit, group sharing, and permissible shared categories per group, there were no other restrictions. The app wasn’t slower, glitchy, or anything else that detracted from the user experience other than the ads and quantity limits. Stated another way, it is truly a risk-free experience for anyone looking to get a little more organized in their life. All, or nearly all the ideas for organizing presented in these articles, will function with the free version.

As a final note worth mentioning, sharing a device’s coupon code with a friend will net them a 25% discount, bringing the total purchase price back down to $7.49. If the friend shares their code in return, you’ll get the same 25% discount. Happy organizing!

In the world of retro gaming, your collection is more than just a hobby—it’s a passion, a time capsule, and often a significant investment. Whether you’re proudly displaying your CIB (Complete In Box) treasures or hunting down that elusive factory sealed variant, proper organization is essential for both enjoying and protecting your classic games.

The Storage Dilemma: Plastic Bins vs. Display Shelves

How you store your retro gaming collection impacts both preservation and enjoyment. Many collectors start with plastic bins, which offer protection from dust and light but hide your treasures from view. As Reddit threads reveal, serious collectors eventually graduate to dedicated video game shelves that provide both organization and visual appeal.

“Store safely” isn’t just advice—it’s a necessity. Classic cartridges, particularly those from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, can be sensitive to environmental factors. Proper shelving keeps games accessible while protecting them from potential damage.

When organizing physically, consider these popular methods:

Sorting by console release year (Nintendo, SEGA, PlayStation chronologically)

Alphabetical order within each platform (PS2, PS3, PS4, Xbox)

Series release order (keeping franchises together)

Organizing by region (North American, European, or Japanese releases)

Digital Tracking: Apps vs. Spreadsheets

While physical organization is important, digital tracking has become essential for serious collectors. The debate between using specialized apps versus custom spreadsheets continues to divide the community.

Many collectors start with Excel or Google Docs for custom spreadsheets, appreciating the flexibility to track exactly what matters to them. However, as collections grow, dedicated applications often provide more robust features for complex data relationships and specialized tracking needs.

Popular tracking applications like Gameye, Retro Game Collector, and CLZ Games offer features beyond basic inventory, including:

Gameplay tracking for titles in your backlog

Wishlist management for hunting down rarities

Value tracking to monitor your investment

Collection sharing with fellow enthusiasts

Valuing Your Collection: Understanding the Terminology

Whether for insurance purposes or simply personal knowledge, understanding the value of your collection is crucial. The retro-gaming market uses specific terminology that directly impacts pricing:

Protecting Your Investment: Insurance Considerations

As your collection grows in value, proper insurance becomes increasingly important. Standard homeowners insurance or renters insurance policies often have limitations for collectibles, leading many serious collectors to explore:

Specialized collectibles insurance with agreed value coverage

Insurance riders to existing policies specifically covering video games

Documentation requirements, including appraisals and detailed inventories

Protection against theft, fire, water damage, and natural disasters ensures your collection remains secure even in the worst-case scenarios.

The Digital Solution for Collectors

Introduction

It’s May now and Spring is in full effect! That means throwing away, decluttering, and reorganizing everything from the past year. Living in a smaller house, it’s necessary to use the available space efficiently. About 6 months after my wife and I moved in (this is several years ago now), it quickly became apparent we needed to install some overhead racks for additional storage space. For anyone married out there, you can probably already guess when my wife says “we”, that translates to “I” or “me”. Here’s the corrected version: “I” needed to install some overhead racks in the garage for additional storage.

Over a few beers and several hours, my father-in-law and I completed the installation. He spouted helpful advice like, “You’re putting mounting brackets in the wrong way,” that would have ultimately bungled the project, but we managed to get the job done. I will admit, however, the final phase was nerve-wracking. The ceiling mounted brackets must align precisely. If you botch the installation, the other pieces will not fit together, and you must deconstruct the entire unit to fix the misaligned bracket(s). Yes, it’s as much fun as it sounds.

Regardless of whether you store extra tools or household goods in an attic, basement, or garage storage rack, knowing what you own and where’s it’s stored is essential. I cannot remember how many times I’ve spent 30+ minutes searching for some obscure item only to find it in a random closet or box.

This article, I wanted to share a storage tracking system built in monoca 2 for any bulky or infrequently used items. Let’s get into it!

Previous Articles

Plastic Tote Bins

A moving tip I learned a solid two decades ago—stackable plastic tote bins are you friend. The ability to place items inside a sealable (with the lid) container for an indefinite period, then empty the bin and stack one on top of the other is convenient storage hack. Plastic bins moved me to Uni, out from Uni, to my first apartment, out of my first apartment, and so on. After each space was furnished and set up the way I liked, it was always such a satisfying process to condense the bins into a single stacked unit before throwing them in the closet to be forgotten until the next move.

Now, those once empty bins are filled with random, but essential objects that get used once every two years (or more). The key word being essential. For example, in the sample photos there’s a Home Depot brand spray bottle with the big orange letters ‘HDX’. Every few years the fence requires re-staining, and part of that process is applying an even coating of a special soap to prepare the wood for stain. Do I want to keep the sprayer? No. Will I eventually need the sprayer again? Yes.

The question then becomes: how do I remember where the sprayer is after not having seen or used it for several years? With monoca 2 there is a solution.

The Organization System

The gallery of images above showcases the organizational system. Categorizing objects by a common element or by their authentic randomness, filled bins received labels written with markers. Two notable examples are the oil change parts bin, and another holding a collapsable basket, spray bottle, and filters for a vacuum. Since I access the overhead rack via ladder from the same direction every time, I imagined the bins’ positions as directions on a clock face. As the least frequently used, the oil-change and random assortment bins sit in the far-back corner at the 11 o’clock position. Used more frequently, the fire-making tote bag sits towards the front of the rack at the 10 o’clock position.

In designing the category fields, immediately recognizable physical characteristics and the bin’s location were essential data points. I decided to keep this storage system simple with only the following subcategory fields:

Storage Location (Clock Hands)

Bin Type (Square, Rounded)

Color (Grey, Dark Grey, Blue)

Contents

Photo

Only a handful of organized items existed at the time of writing this article. This week, I must complete the remaining monoca 2 entries as other bins now occupy the previously open overhead rack space. The system is simple, but should save a lot of time down the road. Now, if searching for some tool or other object, monoca 2 needs to be the first place I look for confirmation, instead of wandering the house, throwing open closet doors, or breaking out the garage ladder. I’m working on developing the correct mental habits, but it takes time.

Conclusion

I suppose one of many changes that comes with getting older is appreciating life’s small conveniences. It was a bit of work, yes, but using this reference system in monoca 2 will save a lot of time and heartache in the future.

Using this system will also reduce the number of times repeat purchases are made. Taking things out from the attic yesterday, I completely found several (forgotten) inflatable water ‘loungers’ tucked away in a bin. Since summer is approaching, folks are headed back out to lakes, rivers, and beaches to enjoy themselves and soak up the limited sunny months here in the PNW. Finding those loungers means one less thing to buy thanks to monoca 2.

Collecting video games is more than just amassing titles—it’s about preserving nostalgia, celebrating beloved franchises, and showcasing your passion in a way that truly inspires. Yet the practicalities of organizing, maintaining, and expanding a collection can become challenging. As your library grows, you may find yourself struggling to locate certain titles, unknowingly purchasing duplicates, or wishing you had a better system for logging your most cherished games. If you’ve been feeling this way, you’re not alone—and this guide is here to help!

Embracing a Better Organizational Strategy

An organized collection ensures that every game is visible, accessible, and properly preserved. For some, this might mean arranging by console so you can quickly find your favorite Nintendo classics, while others might prefer sorting by genre or alphabetical order for swift browsing. Traditional shelves are usually the go-to method, but enthusiasts often turn to specialized display cases or bins that accommodate different shapes and sizes, especially when it comes to retro game storage.

If you’re a collector looking to enhance your existing setup, consider a few guiding principles. First, think about the flow of your space and how you typically search for a game—by console, by year, or by personal preference. Next, strive for a balance between aesthetics and functionality so that your collection remains as pleasing to look at as it is easy to navigate. Finally, don’t forget about protection. Proper containers, dust-free surfaces, and stable room temperatures can help maintain the condition of older cartridges, discs, and rare collector’s editions.

Streamlining Inventory: A Tailored Digital Tool

Physical organization is only half the battle. With the right digital system, you can keep track of what you already own, avoid duplicates, and record important details about every title. While spreadsheets and notebooks can certainly do the job, they often require a fair bit of manual effort. A more seamless solution comes in the form of a mobile app designed specifically for collectors who value flexibility, ease of use, and customization.

This app stands out by allowing you to create your own categories, subcategories, and tags. Whether you separate games by console or group them by personal rating, you’re free to establish a structure that fits your style. When you add a new item—say, an elusive retro find—barcode scanning keeps data entry to a minimum. Searching is made equally simple. Instead of scrolling through page after page, you can filter by a custom tag, a category name, or a specific keyword, retrieving the exact game you want in an instant.

Beyond cataloging, the app further refines collection management through reminders and alarms. If you’ve been itching for an upcoming release or want to stay up to date on your collecting goals, you can schedule notifications that keep you in the loop. And when you’re ready to show off your meticulously curated selection, a built-in sharing feature lets you display your library to fellow fans or through social media. Multiple display options and skins also ensure that your digital archive is as visually appealing as your physical shelves.

At monoca2, in the free version mobile app, you can register up to 100 items—enough for smaller collections or for those who want to test the waters. For collectors juggling large or rapidly expanding libraries, the premium version unlocks unlimited items, categories, and additional functionalities that take your collecting experience to the next level!

Making Your Collection Shine

A neat and well-documented library is often its own reward, but there’s plenty you can do to enhance the look and feel of your gaming space. Displaying games with prominent box art or unique cover designs can transform your collection into a gallery. If you want to draw attention to a prized title or limited edition piece, consider placing it at eye level or shining a subtle LED light on the area to highlight its significance. Retro cartridges can be arranged to showcase iconic label designs, while contemporary disc cases can stand upright on shelves for easier browsing.

Thoughtful storage helps protect your investments, too. Dust sleeves reduce wear and tear on cartridges, while stable temperature and humidity prevent damage to delicate items. Any collector who’s spent time hunting for a rare version or a sealed game knows how heartbreaking it can be to see it deteriorate. A little care goes a long way in ensuring each piece of your collection stays in top shape for years to come.

Elevate Your Gaming Hobby

Organizing a video game collection isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about saving time, reducing frustration, and maintaining the condition of your cherished titles. By combining a strong physical system—be it shelves, bins, or a mix of both—with a digital tool that simplifies cataloging and sharing, you can transform an unwieldy stack of games into a showcase-worthy library.

Ultimately, the joy of collecting lies in discovery: unveiling long-forgotten classics, tracking down elusive special editions, and celebrating your own personal taste. When your library is organized and documented, you’ll spend more time playing and less time searching. With a clean, cohesive setup and an app that adapts to your collecting style, it’s easier than ever to enjoy, expand, and share your passion for gaming.

Why not start today?

Redesign your shelves to fit your unique collecting method.

Download the mobile app to register items, set reminders, and customize categories that reflect your favorite consoles or genres.

Explore new ways of displaying your rarest or most significant games, ensuring they shine as centerpieces in your evolving collection.

In the end, it’s all about making your hobby more enjoyable. By upgrading how you organize and track each piece, you’re giving yourself the gift of convenience—and a visually stunning tribute to the gaming worlds you love. Game on!
