Introduction

This article represents the continuation of a 2-part series on testing password strength using the website PasswordMonster. In the first part, which you can find here, we discussed using the auto generation feature in accoca to effortlessly create various passwords for testing. While I hope most readers understand without my stating it, please DO NOT TEST ANY PERSONAL PASSWORDS. I understand writing in all-caps and bold is an obnoxious format and I do not like using it. However, it is a point so important it needed to be emphasized. What’s more, all passwords tested in this two-part article series are not used in any actual/live accounts. Likewise, any sample passwords presented in these articles should not be used for any current or future accounts. Ever. By the very nature they are posted online on a public website, they are considered, as they should be considered, compromised passwords.

To recap, using accoca we generated three passwords of increasing difficulty. The ‘easiest’ generated password used only upper and lower-case letters. The ‘moderate’ difficulty password incorporated upper-case, lower-case, and numbers. The ‘master’ difficulty password incorporated all four elements. Each password was 14-characters in length. They are:

Easiest: aqMUtYAGkpwrTK

Moderate: UbBy1rRw8ThPEJ

Master: h7FTD5M$&EH#t6

I’m excited to see the results. Let’s get into it!

Previous Articles

Below are links to some of Sola’s other articles about accoca. The articles take less than 5 minutes to read and help provide insight into both the purpose of accoca as an app and how to generate difficult to hack passwords.

Password Manager accoca

What is a Password Manager (Vault)

Where to Download

accoca is available on the Apple App Store—linked below. A couple of key features to note: the app is free to use and Sola of America, Inc. does not collect any personal data from its users. For those wanting to unlock unlimited entries, OCR text detection, and customizable, auto-generated passwords, accoca offers a $7.99 lifetime purchase price. The fully unlocked version can be restored on another device by logging in with the same AppleID.

NOTE: At the time of writing this article, accoca’s lifetime purchase price remains $7.99. A price increase is coming later this summer as Sola invests in improvements to the app. If you haven’t unlocked the complete version, do so now before the price increase!

Testing the Easier Passwords

After navigating to PasswordMonster.com, testing passwords is as simple as typing them into the large text box and waiting for feedback. I performed a fair amount of research in preparation for writing these articles. Various forums online seem to think PasswordMonster is a decent-enough website. All agreed that inputting actual passwords was a foolish practice and should be avoided, despite PM’s bolded disclaimer stating it does not store tested passwords. It reads: Your passwords are never stored. Even if they were, we have no idea who you are! Remember that website hosting providers nearly always capture information about the device, web browser, and IP address while visiting. Each tested password prompts feedback. See below:

Password123! Results

Not every test result provided a humorous review like Password123! However, I agree with PM’s feedback in that using a ridiculously simple password provides weak security and leaves the user open to attack.

$$McCauley1967$$ Results

In this example, PasswordMonster states it would take 7,000 years to crack the password. Since the number of years seemed exaggerated, I found another password strength tester on Bitwarden’s website. Their results were 13 years. Yet another website, strongpasswordgenerator.org’s Password Checker thinks it would take 37 centuries, or 3,700 years to crack. Personally, splitting the estimates between the three services feels reasonable. Likely this password would take several thousand years to break.

48sn1p3r!!$ Results

Interestingly enough, this third self-generated password was weaker than the above. PasswordMonster stated it would take only 2 days to crack. Bitwarden estimated 10 days, and strongpasswordgenreator.org [abbreviated in this article as SPG.org] says 27 years. If anyone has seen the movie or read the book Minority Report, in this instance I think we use the estimate agreed-upon by two services and exclude the third site, the so-called minority report. The results are in… 48sn1p3r!!$ is a weak and easily guessed password.

aqMUtYAGkpwrTK Results

PasswordMonster immediately came back with a hack time of 2 trillion years. Bitwarden’s assessment was centuries, and SPG.org stated 32,000 years. Once again, I’m suggesting the outlier ‘trillion-year’ figure get tossed and we assume the password would take minimum several thousand years to break.

UbBy1rRw8ThPEJ Results

One cannot help but laugh at the results of this password’s strength. PW Monster provided a very specific “213 billion” years to break the password. The other sites yielded the same results as our previous example of centuries and 32,000 years. Suffice it to say, this password’s complexity seemed to reach the top of the testing scale for the other two testing sites.

h7FTD5M$&EH#t6 Results

The results from this password test exceeded expectations. PW Monster provided a ludicrous 73,000-million year crack time. That’s a number so large I cannot even count it. Bitwarden stated centuries again, confirming that’s their top password rating. SPG.org’s counter came back with 3 million years, proving their scale goes beyond a 32,000 years rating, which I was not expecting based on the previous password’s testing results.

Conclusion

Looking back, this was such a fun article series to write. Sometimes you pick up suggestions or recommended best practices for certain things. I’d always heard the upper-case, lower-case, number, symbol, and 14-character minimum password requirements as being foundational for strong password generation. In this article we really put those suggestions to the test, and I appreciated the results confirming previous suspicions.

As always, we at Sola hope you enjoy the articles. Please leave any feedback or suggestions for future content in the comments below. They are monitored, and we always appreciate input from our user base. You all are what make Sola possible. Until next time!

Introduction

It would not be an exaggeration if I stated that every single, or nearly every single, article involving accoca talks about password strength. At this point, logging in to various websites and apps with usernames and passwords happens daily for almost everyone in the world. In fact, for a future article, I’m taking it upon myself to track how many times in a single day I log into a system. This includes a password manager like accoca, a banking app, website, or any other time a system is accepting login credentials. I plan to tally each instance throughout the day to attempt to quantify the daily password exposure of someone who uses computers extensively.

In this article we’re exploring various password strengths using a website called PasswordMonster to predict the time required to ‘crack’ our sample passwords. The purpose is not to perfectly predict password strength. As the user djasonpenney pointed out in this Reddit article from 3 years ago, sites like PasswordMonster almost always overestimate a password’s randomness. Stated another way, if a user’s pet dog ‘Woofy’ is used in some combination of letters, numbers, and symbols, the software might classify it as a strong password. If targeting a specific user, any hacker worth their salt will search social media for those kinds of password clues. Birthdays, pets, recent or current address numbers—anything that makes memorizing a password easier for the user. Under those circumstances, it’s likely a would-be hacker knows about ‘Woofy’, and will use it in various combinations to guess the password.

Woofy is the name of a fake dog Arnold Schwarzenegger gives to the T-1000 to confirm if John Connor’s parents are still alive in the film Terminator 2. They weren’t. Let’s get into it!

accoca’s Password Settings

Referring to the gallery of screen captures below, adjusting accoca’s password generator settings is a straightforward process. After navigating to the add screen for a new login, tap the empty space next to the password field. Keep in mind, the auto generation option is only available on the paid version of accoca. Once the cursor is in the password field, the auto generation text will appear above the on-screen keyboard. Keep an eye out for it as the text is a bit small.

Modifying the parameters of generated passwords requires only a few taps. Auto-generated passwords can be changed to include or exclude lower-case letters [a – z], upper-case letters [A – Z], numbers [0 – 9], and symbols [#$%&()*+-/]. Below the toggle buttons is an option for Length. If the password is truly a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, even an 8- or 10-character password would take years to break. The process could be sped up if the bad actor was sure of 1 or 2 of the characters but on the whole, those passwords represent secure passwords. 14-character or longer passwords are even more robust.

My personal recommendation as the author is to use 14 or more. We’ve spoken at length in previous articles about how devastating even a single email account breach could be. Assuredly, countless personal documents and identifying information are housed there, especially if used for years—like most accounts. While some providers force the user to adhere to rigid password requirements, most do not. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and elect more as opposed to less complexity.

Sample Passwords for Testing in Part 2

Using the auto generation function we generated several passwords, all 14-characters in length, with varying parameters. The most complicated password included all four of the character options toggled. The second-most complicated removed symbols and the third-most complicated excluded both symbols and numbers from the generated password. We’ll also come up with simpler-to-hack password combinations ourselves. It is necessary to put passwords with easily recognizable names, figures, or number combinations against the more complicated.

My personal prediction as the author is that the name and number only combination passwords can/could be guessed in days. The auto-generated passwords with all parameters active would likely take years, including hundreds of thousands or above 1 million years to crack. I will explain below.

A Small Statistics Lesson

To better understand password difficulty, we should understand a basic statistical principle. Let’s assume we have a board in front of us with 3 lights. Like a television, each light can only be Red, Green, or Blue at any given time. To figure out the total possible combinations of lights on the board we must multiple each light’s options by the total numbers of lights. Explained another way…

Light 1 can only be Red, Green, or Blue = 3 possible colors

Light 2 is the same. It can only be Red, Green, or Blue at any given time = 3 possible colors

Light 3 is the same as the first two, which means it also = 3 color options

Light 1 (3 possibilities) x Light 2 (3 possibilities) x Light 3 (3 possibilities) = 9 total possible color combinations

3 x 3 x 3 = 9 total color combinations for the board of lights

Now! If we assume that any piece of our 14-character password can be an upper-case letter, lower-case letter, number, or symbol… that means each piece has 72 total combinations. 26 upper-case letters, 26 lower-case letters, 10 numbers, and 10 symbols = 72. 72 ^ 14 = 72 to the power of 14, meaning 72 multiplied by itself 14 different times equals a staggering 100,613,197,241,791,537,106,386,944 total combinations. There are so many possible combinations most people cannot even count that high.

To be continued…

It is my sincere hope this article is written in such a way that it’s easily understandable for the reader. If not, please drop a comment below and let me know so I can change the phrasing or reduce the complexity. Stay tuned for Part 2 coming soon where we test each password’s strength!

Where to Download

accoca is available on the Apple App Store—linked below. A couple of key features to note: the app is free to use and Sola of America, Inc. does not collect any personal data from app users.

Introduction

monoca 2 recently received a major update to its Barcode feature that allows the user to instantly capture and search for product barcodes. Right from the monoca 2 item creating screen, users can look up the items on Amazon, eBay, and via a Google web search. The Amazon search feature is not completely finalized for the US market, however. Barcodes searched on Amazon from within the monoca 2 app will take the user to Amazon.jp, the Japan-based Amazon platform.

As I thought about the different use case possibilities with the barcode lookup feature, I could not find an immediate convenience for cataloging one-time purchase items such as books. Later, I realized that feature would significantly enhance the convenience of ordering ‘maintenance’ items such as return register air filters, air purifier filters, or water filters (sink or refrigerator). We’ll explore that concept more in another article.

For the purposes of this article, I chose several objects with different origins to better evaluate monoca 2’s barcode search function. The results were impressive. Let’s get into it!

Previous Articles

In previous articles we’ve discussed using monoca 2 for collecting and rating coffee, registering purchased products for warranty, and using category presets. Links to those articles as well as where to download monoca 2 for both Android and iPhone are posted below.

Where to Download

The fully unlocked version of monoca 2 comes with unlimited item creation, 10 shared groups, no ads, and higher resolution icons and images, is available for a single, lifetime unlock payment of $9.99. Share your device’s trial code with a friend to give them a 25% discount. Share each other’s codes and you can both receive a discount.

App Store: Download for iPhone/iPad

Google Play: Download for Android

Web(Beta): https://monoca2.web.app/

Category Parameters

Since this article was meant to serve as a test for the new update, I’ve yet to incorporate the barcode field into other previously made categories as an enhancement, but plan to review them soon. The category is called BARCODE TESTERS. Inside there are three subcategories: Shipped from Japan, Bought in US, and Books. When choosing the subcategories, my goal was to test different kinds of items to investigate how effective a search monoca 2 performed.

I will carry forward the subcategory fields listed below into a new category for Wishlist items. An often-overlooked function of monoca 2 is the user’s ability to create new Collections. The default collections are All Items, Owned Items, and Wishlist. Up until this point, items listed under the various categories discussed in these articles were all owned items of mine. After the barcode update came out, I realized the potential to ‘price watch’ an item seen in the store. Refer to the second set of screen captures for more info on this.

Subcategory Fields

Search Items via Barcode

After the initial category setup, it was time to add my test items. I chose a chocolate drink powder mix that is a special import item, a book (Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy), and a metal toolbox from Toyo brand in Japan—also a specialty import. While not shown below, I took a photo of the chocolate drink mix container but it was blurred. The barcode scanner works so quickly, as soon as it’s within the camera’s view it is captured. Crazy.

It’s important to note that an item’s barcode cannot be searched prior to the item being saved. Once saved, tapping the barcode pulls up a search directory. As mentioned earlier, searching Amazon searches Amazon.jp, not the US Amazon. Let’s avoid that for now.

Using the eBay search option, the barcode found the exact print for my copy of Anna Karenina. The web search, seen on the next screen capture, pulls up the book’s listing on the US Amazon (I verified), and on Penguin House, the publisher’s website.

No Secondary Barcode Application

If you are an iPhone user, even on the most up-to-date version of iOS is unable to read barcodes directly with the camera in the same way it scans QR codes. The thought may have occurred to some readers that using monoca 2 for scanning barcodes is somehow slower. Depending on whether a user downloaded a separate barcode app has, I’d guess the speed is the same or slower. It is not an exaggeration when I say the search results after tapping each search platform were nearly instantaneous. Sola executed the API (application programable interface) used for connecting each platform well.

Conclusion

Even as I wrap up writing this article, I imagined another use for the barcodes: looking up children’s toys as a kid. It’s any wonder my own mother didn’t kick me out of the house for being so annoying. Every time we went to a supermarket that sold more than just groceries, you can bet I begged to walk the toy aisles. One of the beautiful things about the internet is the access and speed with which anyone with a connection can access information. If you’re walking the aisles with your kid and they want a specific toy, with monoca 2 you easily confirm if that store has the best price or if it’s cheaper online.

Knowing the barcode can be equally useful when searching for rare or collector’s items as they are unique, allowing the user to pinpoint the exact items they’re looking for. As I go about the next couple of weeks, I’m sure I will think of more applications for the new feature. Until then!

If you have any feedback or suggestions for content in future articles, leave a comment below. I look forward to hearing from you and we’ll catch you on the next one.

Introduction

Recently, Sola made an investment in the monoca 2 organization app and rolled out an impressive update. In the next posted article, we’ll discuss one of those update features, which allows the user to scan and look up barcodes on Amazon and other providers. As a result of the investment, the price of monoca 2’s lifetime unlock fee increased from $7.99 to $9.99. In case the modest uptick in price is too much for some readers’ budgets, this article reviews the free version of monoca 2, to include a comparison of the paid vs. free features.

While thankfully my wife and I are not experiencing extreme budgeting currently, at various points in our lives both of us have been beyond broke. I’m not here to shame anyone if you feel you cannot afford the unlocked version. I will comment, however, that the $9.99 lifetime unlock fee is less than two coffees from a coffee shop, a lunch special at a restaurant not even including tip and a drink, or a dozen donuts (depending on the shop). A quick aside, not that one should eat donuts with any regularity but… I stopped visiting my favorite donut shop in town after their prices increased to $18 for a dozen. Sheesh.

Google Play: Download for Android

Free vs. Unlocked Versions

The differences between the free and unlocked (paid) versions of monoca 2 are mostly innocuous. It’s one aspect of Sola I appreciate as a company. Countless times with the free version of an app I grew frustrated with the severely limited use or obnoxious paywalls. With 30-second (or longer) full-screen ads and a nearly invisible “X” button to close it out the message was obvious—give us money to make this headache go away. Those experiences left me with the impression that the company did not care about creating a genuinely useful or convenient app, only in getting paid. More to come on Sola’s advertising practices later in the article. Below are bullet points with the key differences highlighted.

Full Version

Unlimited registration of products

Create up to 10 groups for sharing categories

Unlimited number of categories attached to shared groups

No Ads (obviously)

Free Version

Registration of products limited to 100 pieces

Create 1 group for sharing

Up to 3 categories attached to the single shared group

Ads shown

Unobtrusive Advertisements

In a future article I want to discuss mindfulness and incorporating solid organizational practices into your daily life. I mention this because if you’ve been following along and read the article on Warranty Registration, you’ll notice I added a couple of new entries (see screen captures). Following my own advice, the company I purchased the foot massager from off of Amazon extends the manufacturer’s warranty from 1 year to 3 years if registered within 30 days of purchase.

Looking at any of the screen captures, you’ll notice the bottom ~1/8 of the screen is occupied by advertisements on the free version of monoca 2. The ads rotate from time to time, but per my experience they are unobtrusive and generally do not detract from the user experience. The second capture shows the error message you’ll receive if attempting to add more than 3 categories with a shared group. Finally, there is a 100-count entry cap for all stored items, which should be more than enough for most users to successfully play around on the platform and make a purchase decision one way or another.

Conclusion

My next big organization project is to create entries for several hundred books from my personal ‘library’. Collection might be a better word for all the books rather than library. Regardless, there are a handful of repeats because I’m a sucker for a good deal. I purchased a book from a second-hand bookstore for $2 only to find out there was copy at home sitting on the shelf. Adding all those titles to a category will spare me from making those mistakes in the future.

In my experimentation with the free version of monoca 2, other than the total items limit, group sharing, and permissible shared categories per group, there were no other restrictions. The app wasn’t slower, glitchy, or anything else that detracted from the user experience other than the ads and quantity limits. Stated another way, it is truly a risk-free experience for anyone looking to get a little more organized in their life. All, or nearly all the ideas for organizing presented in these articles, will function with the free version.

As a final note worth mentioning, sharing a device’s coupon code with a friend will net them a 25% discount, bringing the total purchase price back down to $7.49. If the friend shares their code in return, you’ll get the same 25% discount. Happy organizing!

Where to Download

Introduction

In our post from September of this year we introduced readers to monoca 2, a universal item management application developed for users to quickly and easily organize a broad range of item types and categories. The original article What is monoca 2? can be found by clicking HERE. It’s only a 3-minute read and provides an excellent background for those wanting to learn more about monoca 2 as a digital organization app.

This article will focus on a use-case for tracking camping or other outdoor equipment. Follow us for updates as next article we’ll talk about how to use monoca 2 to create a vinyl music collection!

Where to Download

monoca 2 is available on both the App Store and Google Play Store. Links to the two versions are below. For a one-time fee of $7.99, users can access the fully unlocked, ad-free version for life. The unlocked version removes ads and allows users to create up to 10 sharable groups. Paid accounts can also register unlimited items and create unlimited categories.

For example, let’s say you and your partner wanted to create a ‘Smith Household’ group. With the unlocked version, you could then create unlimited categories within the ‘Smith Household’ such as camping equipment, ski equipment, rock climbing equipment, Holiday decorations, movies, books, or even a music collection. Follow the links below and try it for free.

monoca 2 for Camping Gear

Living in Pacific Northwest of the United States (Washington and Oregon State), there is no shortage of outdoors activities to enjoy. Hiking, camping, river rafting, snow skiing or snowboarding, mountaineering, or even climbing at an indoor rock gym. My wife and I enjoy camping, but with busy schedules we can’t always go as often as we’d like. Months will pass without cracking the storage bins or opening the linen closet where we store our backpacks, headlamps, water bladders, and other essential camping gear.

While getting a break from the city and enjoying the quiet, natural beauty of the outdoors is relaxing, one must be prepared to face many different types of situations. Things do not always go according to plan, which is why it’s so important to be organized with the gear you bring. There are several questions that will determine preparations.

What will the weather be like?

Are the tent and sleeping pads we’re bringing rated sufficiently for the cold?

Does the campsite have a bear box to store our food, or… should we bring a dry-bag to hang from the trees?

Is there cell reception, or do I need a GPS emergency messenger device?

These kinds of questions are essential for remaining safe while camping.

Customizing monoca 2

Let’s get into how to customize the monoca 2 app for camping gear.

Tapping ‘Add Category’ from the Home Screen brings you to the left-screen capture shown below. From this category screen you can change the category name itself, icon, and Group sharing. Tapping on the ‘Subcategory’ tile, you will be taken to the screen on the right. Using the ‘+ Add Subcategory’ button, additional subcategories can be added, shown below.

Tapping ‘Edit Field’ (above-left) will bring you to another screen where the item’s fields can be added, removed, or re-ordered. For the purposes of this article, I added a custom field location called ‘Storage Location’, since our camping gear is primarily stored between three places: an upstairs linen closet, a large plastic bin on an overhead rack in the garage, and on several shelves. For example, our two tents and sleeping bag are in the linen closet, but all our cooking gear, including portable gas are stored in the garage.

This screen will add a field for a specific category. Use left screen to arrange.

This is where monoca 2’s picture function can save additional time. If the subcategory item is opened fully, the actual location is written there; however, it’s often possible to see the item’s storage location just by looking at the picture. Convenient, right?

Simpler Customization

In certain instances, it may be less convenient to organize with subcategories. Maybe your personal organization system is better suited for separate ‘essential’ and ‘optional’ category lists. Leaving everything as ‘Uncategorized’ in the subcategory screen, you can scroll through all your camping gear at once in either a list view, or grid view. By clicking the three dots in the upper-right of the screen, you can also use the ‘Search’ function to easily find, remember exactly what the item looks like, where it’s stored, or any other important details. In other words, whatever works for you!

Conclusion

monoca 2 is a versatile and highly customizable app, ready to tackle whatever organizational needs you have. I lost count how many times I’ve forgotten where a piece of gear was stored. Using the app, everything can be easily located. I especially appreciate the simplicity of opening a subcategory and simply scrolling through the images so I can better remember what we already own, what it looks like, and if it will be useful on our next adventure.
